Besides обозначает добавление к уже упомянутому, except обозначает исключение из упомянутого: there were four people besides you там было еще четверо, кроме/не считая вас, ср. everybody was there except you там были все, кроме/за исключением вас; I like all vegetables except carrots я люблю все овощи, кроме моркови
